An Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
by Portia Nelson, from There's a Hole in My Sidewalk
(A suggestion for clarity: substitute "responsibility" for "fault" in chapter III.)
Here's a map anyone could relate to. Living is a rough road indeed; one of unending problems. This poem's value and liberation is in the honest awareness, without the poisons of denial, defense or condemnation. When we look, we know which chapters we have been in, and which chapter we are presently inhabiting. The leading edge of our continued development is in reaching for the next rung up the ladder. God's command to "Grow and be fruitful" in leaving the Garden of Eden and journeying into the world, still remains a high watermark to live.
